Tomy Takkies’ new initiative aims to showcase remarkable businesses led by inspiring women who are making a difference in their communities. As a brand with a long history of empowering women, Tomy is also making a financial contribution to these small, female-owned businesses to ensure they can continue to thrive. This initiative builds upon Tomy’s commitment to supporting women and girls across South Africa, and the brand’s long history of donating a portion of its proceeds to platforms that promote gender equality and women empowerment.

Meet Sibonginkosi Msipha, aka Mama Bongi, a Cape Town-based entrepreneur who makes classic and vegan chocolate chip cookies. Travelling all the way from Zimbabwe, she and her mentor Julia founded Mama Bongi. By pushing doubt aside and following their passion, they created an artisan cookie business. Now, with Mama Bongi’s love for baking and Julia’s business savvy, they’ve established a small but mighty team that makes magic happen.

“Baking the best chocolate chip cookies brings immense joy to my heart, especially when I see people enjoying every bite. My cosy kitchen at Julia’s office in Wynberg (which is practically a home serves as our delicious cookie haven). When I’m not baking cookies, I contribute to Amazing Spaces, a local female-driven business centred on connecting people. This business allows me to support my children back home in Zimbabwe, and that’s just the beginning of our incredible journey!”, she says.

What sets Mama Bongi’s cookies apart is her dedication to home-baked freshness and taste. These big, crunchy-on-the-outside, and soft-on-the-inside cookies are a chocolate lover’s dream come true, stuffed with the finest chocolate chips.

“We take immense pride in every batch we create, ensuring that each cookie is made with love and care. Our cookies are more than just delicious treats – they’re a reflection of our passion for what we do. Each cookie is baked to order, ensuring the utmost freshness and mouth-watering taste that will leave you craving more.”, says Mama Bongi.

In the next 3 to 5 years, Mama Bongi and Julia envision not just having their cookies in local cafés and delis, but making Mama Bongi a household name found in all the best artisanal bakeries and family-run supermarkets (all while keeping in line with being a home-baked brand). “We’re dreaming big, but never at the expense of making home-baked products, and we won’t stop until we’ve shared our delightful cookies all over South Africa!”

“We’re also proud to provide job opportunities through our cookie business, making a positive impact on people’s lives, as well as the lives of their families. Our team members, like our sous-chef Sylvia and the ever-talented Prince, are living examples of how fun, love, and cookies can truly transform lives.” says the duo.

Mama Bongi’s words of wisdom this Women’s Month are, “Never underestimate the power of your dreams, no matter how big or small they seem. And always surround yourself with a village of motivational women who lift you higher!”
