At Tomy, we’ve made it our mission to recognise and support amazing female entrepreneurs who make a difference in their communities. This month’s feature goes out to Pauline Pitman, the driving force behind The Nut Mill, situated in the charming KZN Midlands.
A Woman Achieving Her Dreams
Pauline wears many hats, from being a proud mom of two teenagers, farmer and entrepreneur. As a passionate advocate for healthy, natural foods, Pauline had a vision of creating a product that was natural and healthy and realised that she needed to establish her own brand to make that goal a reality.
Where It All Started – The Story Behind The Nut Mill
Pauline’s journey started in Melbourne, Australia, when her husband was diagnosed with cancer. The couple began their search for holistic methods and natural foods to support her husband’s health. Together, they discovered the benefits of freshly milled, natural nut butter as part of a plant-based diet. Upon returning to their farm in Hilton, Pauline made it her mission to introduce this nutrient-dense superfood to others, resulting in the creation of The Nut Mill.
Overcoming Challenges and Thriving
“Just after my mill arrived, my husband lost his fight with cancer, and I was left to fulfil this dream on my own…which was the toughest part of my journey,” says Pauline.
As a female entrepreneur, Pauline has faced her fair share of challenges. The loss of her husband was a particularly difficult time, and she took on the daunting task of growing the business on her own. Pauline persevered, channelling her grief into something positive. Today, The Nut Mill flourishes, with an expanded product line, a new production facility in a converted barn among Nguni cattle on her Midlands farm, local employment opportunities, and partnerships with neighbouring businesses. Her products, loved locally in KZN, now reach customers nationwide.
Crafted with Love and Purpose
The Nut Mill is a reflection of Pauline’s passion for whole foods and sustainability. From locally sourced macadamias and almonds, she crafts a range of 100% natural nut butters, free from additives and preservatives, ensuring each jar is as wholesome as it is delicious.
Pauline shares, “The more people who are recognising the importance of clean eating and nutrition, the happier I am.”
A Vision for Growth
Pauline’s dream is to extend the reach of her company, sharing the benefits of healthy, natural foods with a wider audience. Just as she nurtures the trees on her farm, Pauline nurtures her business with patience, passion, and creativity, ensuring it flourishes organically and with purpose.
Don’t forget to follow The Nut Mill on Facebook and Instagram so you don’t miss out on their latest organic products for sale. And, of course, if you’re in KZN, take a drive to Pauline’s farm and show your support!
